Systems Administrator

Primary Function

The IT Systems Administrator provides operational installation, configuration, deployment, security, maintenance, and support functions for the systems that comprise the information technology and infrastructure used throughout the Big G Information Technology Department.  Reviews, develops, designs, monitors, and maintains IT systems to maximize organizational performance and security.  Provides ongoing analysis and problem-solving to ensure the integration of technology in effective workflow and process design.  The Systems Administrator has advanced knowledge in their field, assumes higher level projects, mentors, and trains staff members.


  • Provides prompt, courteous, professional, high-quality, and consistent support to Big G staff and provides mentoring to IT staff
  • Troubleshoots and resolves end user issues by guiding user through corrective steps in a patient and friendly manner
  • Is a good steward of Big G’s finances and technical assets
  • Tracks and documents end-user requests and issues received via work order system
  • Creates installation and setup documentation for the IT department. Creates and regularly updates policies with pertinent information
  • Identifies ways of improving current services and consults with team on issues and problems
  • Is responsible for and takes initiative to continuously uphold and improve the integrity, stability, and user experience of all systems
  • Performs DR planning & testing
  • Troubleshoots and resolves all issues with high a level of confidence and customer service
  • Identifies trends in recurring problems and makes changes to prevent such problems
  • Researches and stays current with systems security, hardware, software, and computer-related procedures and methods
  • Performs hardware migrations, OS/firmware upgrades, software maintenance/conversion, performs capacity planning, and gathers requirements for new applications
  • Maintains development, testing, and production environments
  • Identifies areas where technology or changes to technology can improve efficiency
  • Monitors technology systems to optimize performance, resource use, and configurations
  • Ensures security and privacy of Big G systems
  • Develops and maintains security groups for granting access to file systems and networks
  • Ensures that minimum access is granted to file systems and network connections
  • Ensures that all OS’s, software, and firmware are routinely patched, and vendor supported
  • Identifies hardware, software, and other technical situations that may present security risks and takes action to correct
  • Instills a high degree of confidence in end users by designing dependable systems and providing prompt response times to reported issues


  • Demonstrate ability to learn quickly, have strong oral and written communication, presentation skills, and enthusiastic customer service
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure due to multiple calls, inquiries, projects, and interruptions
  • Perform physical tasks such as climbing, lifting, and maneuvering to install or move equipment and provide cabling as necessary
  • Must be able to reliably travel to other facilities

Additional Requirements

  • Microsoft: Active Directory, Azure AD, Exchange, Exchange Online, Microsoft 365, PowerShell, File Server, Print Server, DNS, and other Microsoft related servers or services
  • VMware:  vCenter, ESXi, and other virtualization systems
  • Veeam: Backup and Replication or other backup, replication, and disaster recovery services
  • ManageEngine: AD Audit Plus, ServiceDesk Plus, Desktop Central, or other similar supporting products
  • Networking: Ethernet wiring, IP Addressing, Routing, Subnets, VLAN, POE, and VPN with Cisco, Ubiquiti, HP, ADTRAN or other switch/router vendors
  • Firewalls: Fortinet, Smoothwall, or other firewall vendors
  • VoIP: Cisco Call Manager or other VoIP communication systems
  • Linux: shell and developing or installing other Linux environments for firewalls or other appliance-based applications
  • Servers: including but not limited to Supermicro, IBM, HP, Dell, and a good understanding of hardware configurations including various RAID modes

Education Required

Bachelor’s degree or 5+ years’ work experience supporting hardware and software for servers, networks, desktops, peripherals, phone systems and remote users
